INVESTIGATION DATE: 1/28/11

LUNAR CONDITIONS: Moon 25% full (Waning Crescent)

ABOUT THE LOCATION:
This private family home in Logans Ferry Heights Pennsylvania was once part of a mining community made up of workers from the Springdale Mine and their families. The Springdale Mine began operation circa 1920 and supplied coal to the Colfax Power Plant through a tunnel that went under the Allegheny River.
Steel Town Paranormal was contacted by the owner of the home, a single mother of three children, who was desperately seeking assistance in dealing with strange occurrences that seem to be targeting her and, in particular, her three year old son. Although there is no history of death in the home that could be directly tied to the coal mine, the previous owner of the home, an elderly gentleman named Bob, did pass away in the bathroom. Most of the activity reported in the home, however, seems to center around a closet in the second floor bedroom of the three year old boy and in the kitchen downstairs. The claims of activity include shadow sightings, feelings of being physically touched by an unseen presence, hearing unexplained voices, and a general feeling of heaviness or dread.

Much of our initial time investigating this case was spent in the attic and basement of the home but, other than an incident in the attic where investigator Chris thought a pebble or some other small object might have been tossed toward him, we really did not begin to experience anything potentially paranormal in nature until we moved our focus into the second floor bedroom of the three year old boy who has been most affected by the reported activity. Melanie had a personal experience while standing near the closet when she felt a heaviness in the air and noticeable pressure on her chest. Shortly thereafter, Carrie stood in the same spot and experienced similar feelings. None of the three male investigators present (Chris, Josh and Bob) could pick up on what the girls were feeling. Chris and Bob did, however, have a personal experience of their own. While investigating in the living room on the first floor, Chris caught a very sudden but direct glance of what appeared to be a shadow in a doorway that led to the kitchen. It loosely resembled the shape of an arm and quickly pulled away toward the kitchen. A few seconds later, Bob saw what he believed to be a shadow emerge from the kitchen. Again, it vanished in short order.
As for tangible evidence collected, this investigation marked the first time that we utilized the PX, a tool we recently added to our equipment arsenal. The PX is a device programmed with a vocabulary of over 2000 words. It is used by some paranormal investigators because its electronic voice is believed to give spirits a means of communication. We have not used the PX device enough to form a conclusive opinion on its validity and hence, its usefulness, but the early results we obtained during this investigation are quite intriguing. During an EVP session conducted by Melanie and Carrie in the bedroom of the three year old boy, we captured a possible spirit utilizing the PX to express its anger at the suggestion that the child be moved out of the room. The recording of this incident is not clear enough to merit posting, but the responses that came through the device included the words "bitches", "assholes", and "retards", three words that are not listed among those programmed into the PX.
A second interesting incident involving the PX occurred during an EVP session in the kitchen. In this particular instance, which you can hear by clicking the link below, the mother of the homeowner asks the question, "What is your name?" What follows is an almost immediate response, which we believe to be "Mary Norvelt". Again, neither of those words is on the vocabulary list (we have included a link to that list below). Although, in the context of the conversation taking place at the time, the word "Norvelt" would seem to represent a last name, we discovered a very interesting fact during post-investigation research. Norvelt, like the home's location of Logans Ferry, was a mining town in Pennsylvania. During the Depression, the mine in Norvelt closed and many of its workers migrated to other mines in the area, including Logans Ferry. What makes this particularly interesting is the fact that we identified this word as "Norvelt" prior to gaining any knowledge of the mining town by that name. Is it possible that we made contact with the spirit of someone named Mary Norvelt? Or, could it be Mary from Norvelt? Perhaps she was the wife of one of the miners who came to Logans Ferry when the mines in Norvelt closed. We also learned through subsequent information that the wife of the previous owner was named Mary, though his last name was Bell. We could not confirm this information nor could we confirm any ties to to the town of Norvelt.
Finally, during our analysis of data collected at this investigation, we discovered a very interesting video clip. It can be seen via the link below or on our YouTube video, also posted below. It was captured in the bedroom of the three year old child. The clip shows an unexplained flash of light that emerges from the closet, then quickly disappears. This occurs a short time after Josh removes some sheets of children's' cling-on type stickers from the shelf within that closet. We cannot say with any degree of certainty that what our cameras caught was something paranormal. However, we felt the light was very interesting and worthy of posting for consideration and debate. During our follow-up investigation of this home, which has been scheduled for February 26, we will be conducting experiments in an attempt to debunk the video.
AUDIO CLIP: This audio clip was captured in the kitchen during an EVP session. The PX device being utilized at the time seems to respond directly to the question "What is your name?" with what sounds very much like "Mary Norvelt". Neither word can be found in the PX's vocabulary list, which we have posted below.
PX Word List
VIDEO CLIP: This video clip was captured by one of our IR CCTV cameras in one of the home's bedrooms. Watch the lower right inside of the closet and lower section of the door right after Josh (standing) removes the sheets of stickers from it. He walks out of camera for a brief time, then walks down the hall next to the closet, at which time an unidentified light anomaly appears to reach out toward him.
