WHY I BECAME INTERESTED IN THE PARANORMAL by Carrie
I lived in the country growing up. We were the typical American family: Father, Mother, 2 sisters, a pet dog, and me. I would often hear my parents talking about a man named Henry. Once my sisters and I got old enough to fully understand – we found out that Henry was not an old family friend. He was a ghost! And we believe all of our unexplained experiences over the years were caused by Henry.
We were afraid growing up but our parents would always reassure us that Henry would not hurt us and that we should not be afraid. The radio and lights would turn on and off on their own. The TV volume and channels would change. Once when I was about 12 years old, I even asked Henry to change the channel of the TV – and the channel changed about 5 seconds after I finished my request. The actual response scared my sisters and I so much – that we never asked anything like that again – in fear we would get another response, maybe one that we really didn’t want! I asked my parents about their first encounter with Henry.
They said things happened as soon as they started building their home in the 1970’s. When my parents were building their home, my father had a few friends over to help with the construction. My mother made lunch for the men. All the men sat around the kitchen table, and my mother realized that the napkins were still in the back bedroom. She went back there and saw a man in the bedroom – assuming it was one of my father’s friends, she said “lunch is ready in the kitchen. Come get some before it is all gone.” She didn’t wait for a response; just grabbed the napkins and went back to the kitchen. She then told my father that one of his friends were still in the bedroom. My father gave her an odd look and said that everyone is in the kitchen already. When my parents returned to the bedroom no one was there. My mother swears the man looked like a solid man, wearing dirty blue jeans, a dirty white t-shirt, and a dirty face - like he was covered in coal soot.
In the late 1980’s my father sold a small piece of land to a young couple, who build a home. They had 2 small children. Not long after they moved in my father was talking to the couple, they voiced their concern that their children kept seeing a man in their bed room. Unaware of my mother’s visual experience, they gave the same description of a man with a dirty white shirt and blue jeans and a dirty face. My father told them that it sounds like Henry, and that he won’t hurt them.
Growing up, our dog would often notice things and seem to respond to someone – that we couldn’t see! Things in my parents home would always disappear and only some reappeared – there are some items that have still not returned! You always got the feeling that someone was watching you and following you around the house.
When my sister and I were teenagers we were playing a game of basketball in the driveway. We noticed a man standing in the woods near the driveway. We both stared at him for about 10 seconds then the man turned around and started to walk away….he sort of faded away like a fog. Again, he was wearing dirty jeans and the dirty white t-shirt.
When I was about 18 years old my boyfriend and I were sitting in my parents’ living room and I was telling him about Henry. He was a total skeptic and thought I was crazy. He walked to the front door to leave and the storm door unlocked and opened on its own – then the same happened to the screen door. He looked at me in disbelief. I asked him if that was enough proof of Henry. He still talks about that experience.
My parents said that their home is built above an old underground mine. My parents believe that the ghost in their home is the old coal miner that possibly was killed in the mine. That explains the soot-covered man that a lot of people have seen. Since the ghost was around so often when my parents first built their home, he sort of became part of the family, so they felt is was only appropriate to give him a name. They decided to call the ghost Henry, and the name stuck.
